If you find yourself in marketing and advertising, you may often come across this question:

“What am I supposed to post next?”

Content creation has become one of the major obstacles for social media marketers, especially bloggers, facing this challenge on a daily basis. It may prevent a creator from publishing a post.

Everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Imagine this scenario for a moment. A 6-year-old boy eagerly grabs a razor and starts shaving the bare skin of his face after having seen his dad shave in the bathroom. There is no limit but a simple action of following.

How do children first learn how to act? They copy what they see.

Start Copying

Copying may be a form of stealing, lying or plagiarizing. You may be surprised by the following quotes stated by world famous persons:

• “Good artists borrow, great artists steal” – Picasso
• “We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.” – Steve Jobs
• “I invented nothing new, I simply assembled the discoveries of other men behind whom there was centuries of work” – Henry Ford

In order to come up with our original ideas, we all have to begin with inspiration of others’ works.

Mash up and Remix

Copying does not necessarily mean copying word for word, especially from a single source. Find at least two different sources on the same topic and integrate them together. If it is ever an issue, it is not a crime to give credit to the source in your work. That way, your audience finds pleasure in seeing where your research comes from.

Start Your Collection

Your job as a creator is to stand out in the crowd. Start collecting ideas that make your heart sing. Be touched by books you read, speakers you listen to and videos that inspire you. Make notes of everything that come into your consciousness, even while sleeping or running on the beach.

Create Your Own DNA

The experiences of countless jacking other people’s ideas and opinions over and over will help you get the handle of your inner creativity and bring out your own unique composition in the long run. Your goal is to dig a hole deeper and wider for content than your competitors. Google is there for a reason.

Practice makes perfect. That is how you will master the art of stealing. If those geniuses in advertising and marketing have done it, then you can do it, too.
